The light aircraft was reported missing after leaving the Alpha Airport, west Queensland, yesterday at 4.15pm and failing to arrive at Townsville Airport.

A police spokesperson said an air and land search for the missing plane was set to take place at first light this morning but the man and plane were located safely by the Australian Aviation Safety Authority.

A spokesperson said it appeared the man changed his flight plans but failed to alert authorities.
